Burnout is the Number One Cause of Core Damage!
The core material used in motor stators and rotors is critical to efficient operation and longevity. Motor stators and rotor cores are comprised of thin sheets of steel that are stacked together and insulated from each other. The composition of this steel is highly specialized to minimize the heating effects of hysteresis and eddy currents. Only a handful of steel mills, worldwide manufacture this specialized product.
Finding the Presence of Undetected Moisture in Buildings – Part 2 of 3
In the second part of our three-part series, we will discuss how the condensation of water vapor and vapor retardant barriers are destructive elements that can cause deterioration of materials and failure of building assemblies. There are four different physical mechanisms that can cause moisture to affect surface temperature. We will address the second two of them in this tip.

How to Avoid Thermal Interference in Mechanical Inspections
The thermal effects of product build-up will not just affect the surface signature. It can also impact the health of your asset. In this first IR image (above) we see a motor overheating (surface in excess of 300°F/149°C) because the cooling passages are blocked by material.
Mechanical infrared inspections can be challenging enough, so don’t make it harder by trying to inspect equipment that has a layer of dirt or other product which has accumulated on its surface.
Localize the Source of Anomalous Data with Impedance Values
The use of impedance values can provide a rapid and conclusive means of localizing the source of anomalous data to the rotor, stator, or motor circuit. All of the major motor tester manufacturers provide various data formats to achieve analysis.
Let’s look at the basics. Impedance is the vector sum of resistance, inductance, and capacitance. Inductance and capacitance are 180 degrees apart in their phase relationship and 90 degrees displaced from resistance. The vector sum of these values is “impedance.”
Finding the Presence of Undetected Moisture in Buildings – Part 1 of 3
In this three-part series we will discuss how water can be the single most destructive element that causes deterioration of materials and failure of building assemblies. It can cause or accelerate corrosion, wood-rot, adhesive dis-bond, masonry spalling, and loss of insulation R-value. It is the key element present in the formation of mold and fungi that can lead to indoor air quality problems. The presence of undetected water in a building can affect the value, durability, life-cycle maintenance cost, and occupant health.
