Understanding the Rotor Influence Check (RIC)

A Rotor Influence Check (RIC) provides a three-phase graphic plot of inductance or impedance. A test signal applied to the stator reacts to the incremental stepping of the rotor and its magnet influence. It is a great test when a motor cannot be run at load for monitoring with dynamic testing and vibration analysis. A RIC can be difficult to understand, especially if the basic theory is not understood or the proper testing procedures are not followed.
