Can you post some pictures (real life) of the outside roof surface, what type of fasteners are used, is it a Lap Over type seam system?

I have used various methods to locate intrusion points on metal roofing systems, everything from Cranberry Juice to pumping compressed air between the lap joints.

Post some pictures, in my experience the culprit is normally in the fastening systems, applying excessive torque will cause the rubber washer seals to split, add the normal expansion and contraction from normal roofing thermal loads and you have a point of moisture intrusion.

I have to believe that what you are looking at is a presentation of a)pressure track of the tornado, b) level of destruction observed/estimated, or c) wind velocities observed/estimated and NOT thermal.

-A roll of tape. Someone mentioned the scotch electrical tape. That's what I use. Good for ensuring accurate temp measurements or low emissivity surfaces. Always handy to have regardless of the application. I use white tape for outdoor applications.

-Compressed CO2 with a special glasses cleaning cloth - just in case. I try to use these sparingly.

-A plastic ziplock bag (preferably freezer bags with the easy slide zip). In the winter, going from the cold outside to inside can cause condensation on internal components of the camera. Seal the camera in an air tight bag before entering the warm house/building to allow the camera to warm up safely.

-Visual camera

-Flashlight

I thought I'd start a new topic to specifically discuss the SuperResolution feature that can be unlocked for $395 on all of Testo's current lineup of cameras.

By unlocking this feature, the camera takes five images in rapid succession when hand-held. By using the slight movement of the imager, the spaces in between the detector sites are filled in. Additional image processing helps improve overall sharpness from the offset images.

I can confirm that it really does improve resolution by about 50%, beyond the resolution of the detector when taking a single image in standard mode. I could probably make a stab at evaluating the system MTF because the Testo software can export the image array data to a CSV file, but that's for another time.

One thing I have noticed is the inherent vertical line artifacts (seem to be common in thermal imagers) are a little stronger in the SuperResolution mode - this may be due to its sharpening algorithm after merging the images.

Non Uniformity of Thermal Imagers

Here is a standard image taken of a neutral target, unfocused, to show uniformity of the detector:

Can someone explain the strong vertical lines in this image? They represent a variation of about +/- 0.075 C.

Here's a plot of the average values of all the columns in the above temperature array

The general trend across the image likely has to do with the lens and from a changing incident angle upon the detector.

Can someone explain these spikes that appear as vertical lines? They are in the same place all the time, I see them in the live view as well.

Keep in mind steam lines are often buried in a "sleeve". Hot spots on the surface may only show the area where the steam is escaping the "sleeve" and not pinpoint the leaking steam line. A disclaimer in the report should cover you.

The steps for conducting winter inspections are covered quite nicely in ASTM C 1153 Standard Practice for the Location of Wet Insulation in Roofing Systems Using Infrared Imaging. The process involves having a pattern related mainly to variations in conductive transfer but can be enhanced with the capacitance heat due to solar loading. As is the case in the summer, the roof must be (substantially) dry, sometimes a problem in winter!

Whatever insulation is installed behind the wall, it is inadequate since the stud bays are not completely filled. The insulation should be in complete contact with the back side of the drywall.
